ABOUT
The restoration of traditional stone work is a series of operations to prevent erosion and settlement of existing building components to preserve and enhance the lifespan and aesthetic value of the work. Knowledge of the material properties, traditional techniques and modern compliments for removal, preparation and installation inform a thorough interpretation and repair of damaged masonry.
GRAVITY
We want to eliminate the ground's repatriation of old stone work. Mitigating weight is at the heart of traditional masonry. An understanding of load distributions in the walls informed placement techniques, and is essential.
WATER
Stone walls should be kept dry when possible. Water bearing features should be free of defects to avoid migratory damages due to excess water penetration. Repeated expansion during freeze thaw cycles can ruin a wall that having been dry would remain completely sound.
Our Approach
The restoration operations we provide include the removal and replacement of compromised and contaminant materials, repointing to original specifications where requested or required. We utilize modern techniques for lime grouting of inaccessible void spaces, and both mechanical and chemical strategies for cleaning and further preserving the work. We facilitate opening repairs and modifications such that original work is accurately documented, minimally disturbed, and any masonry modifications are visually and structurally consistent with the existing fabric. In sensitive circumstances we can submit material samples for assessment and provide risk assessments according to documented visual and percussion based observations.
We consider stone on stone contact among other characteristics to be strategic and indispensable to the structural integrity of the work.
